Message from the Chairman

Jim Justesen Eye-Link Chairman

Eye-Link, from its embryonic stage in the mid-nineties until today, is a powerful concept that ultimately became our mission. That is to provide assistive technology through an application process to any Blind or severely vision-impaired Minnesotan. "Talking" software and hardware components have been created to provide Blind people access to all forms of information.

In 1994 — while in rehab learning keyboarding, computing, cooking, techniques for daily living, and grade one Braille — I discovered a problem. Some classmates completed their training — returning to home, work, or a new job — but did not have the "talking" technology to use outside of the rehab center.

Without continuing access to "information," Their newly acquired skills had to be laid aside. Their quest for independence and self-sufficiency became a bumpy and winding trail. One of the only ways to maintain these new skills was to return to a rehab center or comparable facility, utilizing their technology to practice.

Funding resources for vital new-age assistive technologies are limited. A Blind person can apply to the State through their SSB counselor. They can seek help from family, friends, a local Lions Club, or — if they had the personal monetary resources — they can purchase their own technology. The net effect is many Blind people being left behind, needing costly technology critical in helping them acquire new skills and preparing for potential employment.

The Eye-Link Foundation was created exclusively to fill these needs. We are one of the few resources for assistive technology funding. In a case where State Services for the Blind has "denied" a Blind person’s request, an application can be made to the Eye-Link Foundation for help in acquiring needed technology.

Our application is available online. You can also request a Braille or print version by calling the Foundation at 763-561-6967. - Jim Justesen, Chairman
